Saturday Scoreboard: Arapahoe Softball Rolls Past Smoky Hill in Centennial League Showdown
AURORA — The Arapahoe Warriors made a statement on their home diamond Saturday, dispatching Smoky Hill 11-1 in a five-inning Centennial League Challenge clash that showcased exactly why they’re the team to beat in 5A this fall.
The Warriors wasted no time setting the tone at Aurora Sports Park. After a quiet first inning, Arapahoe exploded for eight runs in the second, batting around and chasing Smoky Hill’s starter before the Buffs could find their footing. Senior pitcher Kayla Martinez cruised from there, scattering three hits and striking out six over five innings of one-run ball.
“Our approach at the plate was the difference,” said Warriors coach Jenni Egan, now in her 12th season at the helm. “We’ve been preaching selective aggression all week, and the girls executed. When we don’t chase, we’re tough.”
Smoky Hill’s lone run came on a solo shot from junior catcher Maya Torres in the top of the first — a brief lead that vanished as quickly as the morning chill. The Buffs (4-6, 1-3 Centennial) will look to regroup Tuesday at Cherokee Trail.
Arapahoe (8-2, 4-0) stays perfect in league play and hosts Grandview Thursday in what shapes up as the de facto conference championship preview. First pitch at 4 p.m. — get there early for parking.
