Weekend warriors and bleacher regulars — Saturday delivered the kind of prep sports energy that makes Aurora weekends feel like home. From the diamonds at Phillips Park to the turf at West Aurora's stadium, our local squads put on a show worth talking about at Monday morning coffee.
Softball had the bats humming early. Waubonsie Valley's senior battery clicked for a shutout win over Metea Valley, with pitcher Jenna Morales striking out nine and helping her own cause with a two-run double in the third. Over at East Aurora, the Tomcats rallied from four down in the sixth, capping it on a walk-off sac fly by sophomore Maya Rodriguez — her first varsity RBI. West Aurora split a doubleheader with Naperville North, taking game two behind three hits from cleanup hitter Kayla Thompson.
The real buzz? Girls flag football's second season is officially rolling. Neuqua Valley's defense forced four turnovers in a 26-6 opener against Oswego East, with junior safety Aria Patel returning an interception 45 yards for the game's first score. West Aurora's new spread offense clicked in a 34-12 win over Plainfield South — quarterback Sophie Chen threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. East Aurora fell to Yorkville 18-14 in a back-and-forth thriller decided on a goal-line stand in the final minute.
