Hurricane Isaias: What Aurora Travelers and Families Need to Know Right Now
Hurricane Isaias is barreling toward the northern Gulf Coast, with landfall expected late Friday or early Saturday. While we’re safe from storm surge here at 5,400 feet, the ripple effects will hit close to home for plenty of Aurora residents.
If you’ve got flights booked through Denver International Airport to Tampa, Orlando, New Orleans, or the Panhandle this weekend, check your airline app now. Major carriers are already issuing travel waivers—United, Southwest, and Frontier are allowing free rebooking for flights through Monday. DIA’s website has real-time cancellation updates, but pro tip: call the airline directly if the app won’t let you rebook; hold times are brutal, but agents have more flexibility.
Got family in Gulf Shores, Pensacola, or Mobile? Evacuation orders are active for low-lying areas and mobile home parks in Baldwin County (AL), Escambia County (FL), and coastal Mississippi. Share the FEMA app with them—it pushes real-time shelter locations and evacuation routes even if cell service degrades. The Red Cross has opened shelters at the Pensacola Bay Center and the Mobile Convention Center; both accept pets.
Locally, the Aurora Office of Emergency Management reminds us this is a good weekend to review our go-bags. Colorado wildfire season isn’t over, and the same principles apply: medications, important docs (scan them to the cloud), cash, and a meeting plan if phones die.
Want to help? The Aurora Strong Resilience Fund (auroragov.org/resilience) is coordinating donations for Gulf Coast relief partners. Every $10 covers a hygiene kit for a displaced family.
Stay safe, Aurora. And if you’re traveling—build in an extra day.
