Aurora Police Seek Leads After Overnight Shooting on East Colfax; No Arrests Made
AURORA — Aurora Police Department (APD) investigators are actively working leads but have made no arrests following a shooting late Tuesday night near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and North Dayton Street that left one person hospitalized.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 11:15 p.m. in the parking lot of a commercial strip mall—an area familiar to locals for its late-night taco trucks and proximity to the RTD R Line’s Dayton Station. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital; his condition has not been released as of Wednesday morning.
Detectives from the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit spent the overnight hours processing the scene, which stretched across the lot between the 7-Eleven and the laundromat. Evidence markers dotted the pavement well into the early morning commute, causing temporary lane closures on Colfax that snarled traffic for drivers heading toward I-225.
"We are treating this as an isolated incident and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the general public," said APD Public Information Officer Sergeant Faith Goodrich in a Wednesday briefing. "However, the shooter remains unidentified and at large. We need the community’s help."
Investigators are specifically asking for dashcam or doorbell footage from residents in the surrounding Havana Park and Del Mar Parkway neighborhoods, as well as patrons who may have been at the nearby Taqueria El Jefe or the 24-hour fitness center around the time of the incident.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $2,000. Reference case number 2024-XXXXXX.
