Aurora Police Respond to Domestic Situation; Toddler Found Safe Inside Home
AURORA — A routine welfare check escalated into a significant police response late Tuesday afternoon after officers discovered a young child present during a domestic incident on the city’s east side.
According to the Aurora Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence near East Colfax Avenue and Chambers Road around 4:30 p.m. following a reported disturbance. Upon arrival, officers made contact with family members at the address who confirmed that a toddler was inside the home with the primary subject, identified by police as 32-year-old Marcus Jones.
The presence of the child immediately shifted the tactical priority to a "barricade with a vulnerable person" protocol. Crisis negotiators and the Special Response Team (SRT) were deployed to the scene, establishing a perimeter along the block while evacuating neighboring units as a precaution. For roughly two hours, negotiators maintained communication with Jones, prioritizing the child’s safety above all else.
"Anytime a child is involved, the dynamic changes completely," said APD Public Information Officer Sgt. Jason Snelling. "Our negotiators did exceptional work de-escalating the situation without force."
Jones eventually surrendered peacefully shortly after 6:45 p.m. The toddler was located unharmed inside the residence and immediately reunited with a family member. The Department of Human Services was notified per standard protocol.
Jones faces charges including domestic violence, child endangerment, and obstruction. He is currently being held at the Aurora Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
