Aurora Prep Sports Rewind: Homecoming Heroes & League Title Chases Heat Up (Sept. 29 – Oct. 5)
AURORA — If you blinked last week, you missed the moment the 2026 fall season officially shifted into high gear. From the bright lights of Legacy Stadium to the packed gyms at Grandview and Cherokee Trail, the week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 5 served up a perfect slice of Aurora athletics: rivalry intensity, Homecoming magic, and the first real clarity in the Centennial and East Metro league races.
Football stole the headlines, naturally. The city’s biggest stage belonged to the Eaglecrest vs. Cherokee Trail showdown—a battle for South Aurora bragging rights that lived up to the hype deep into the fourth quarter. Over in the Centennial League, Grandview continued its methodical march, while Smoky Hill and Overland delivered statement wins to keep the playoff picture muddy. Don’t sleep on the 4A/5A crossover games, either; Rangeview and Gateway both grabbed quality non-league scalps that could loom large come seeding time.
Off the gridiron, the volleyball courts were just as loud. Regis Jesuit and Cherokee Trail clashed in a five-set instant classic that had the Raider Rowdys and Cougar student section trading roars point-for-point. On the pitch, Aurora Central’s boys soccer squad kept their undefeated run alive with a gritty win over Hinkley, while the Eaglecrest girls sharpened their state-tournament resume with a shutout streak.
Cross country runners hit the chatfield course for the Dave Sanders Invitational, where the thin air didn't stop several Aurora harriers from posting PRs ahead of the league championships.
