Aurora Residents: What You Need to Know About the Recent Boulder Halloween Shooting

A tragic incident that began at a Halloween party in Boulder has reverberated through our community. On Oct. 31, 18‑year‑old Omar Perez was arrested after police say he opened fire on a group of University of Colorado Boulder students. One student was killed and another suffered life‑threatening injuries before first responders arrived.

The shooting took place just off the university’s campus, a short drive north of Aurora, and has sparked renewed concern about safety at off‑campus gatherings across the Front Range. Local law‑enforcement agencies are working closely with Boulder police to investigate the motive and to ensure that similar events do not endanger our neighborhoods.

Perez’s first court appearance is set for Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Boulder County Courthouse. He will be charged with first‑degree murder, attempted murder and several firearms offenses. If convicted, the penalties could include life imprisonment without parole.

Aurora officials are urging residents to stay informed and to report any suspicious activity. Community meetings are being scheduled at the Aurora Civic Center later this month to discuss campus‑related safety measures and to support the families affected.
